Conservative MP David Davis used one of the most famous lines in UK parliamentary history in calling for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to step down on January 19, as the row over lockdown parties at Downing Street continued.

Davis was met with cheers when he invoked the wartime words of Leo Amery to Neville Chamberlain, themselves originally taken from Oliver Cromwell. “You have sat there too long for all the good you have done, in the name of God, go,” he said.

Johnson responded by saying, “I don’t know what he’s talking about … I don’t know what quotation he’s alluding to.”

The exchange took place on the same day Labour welcomed former Conservative MP for Bury South, Christian Wakeford, to the party. Credit: Parliament TV via Storyful
