West Midlands Police in the UK have released dramatic footage that shows the moment Police Constable Gaz Phillips was knocked down by a hijacked police car during a chase on August 10.

Police apprehended the driver, Mubashar Hussain, in Moseley, a southern suburb of Birmingham, with a taser, but he fought back and jumped into a police vehicle.

PC Phillips clung onto the driver’s door and was dragged to the ground as Hussain drove the car in reverse. Hussain then drove the car over Phillips’s legs.

Hussain drove away at high speed and was tracked to Balsall Heath, where police detained him.

In a victim-impact statement released by West Midlands Police, Phillips said he blacked out at the time but came round in the road to “pain I can’t describe … pain I had never felt before."

Hussain has been sentenced to 12 years for causing grievous bodily harm to Phillips. The police officer underwent three rounds of emergency surgery and spent four weeks in the hospital. Credit: West Midlands Police via Storyful
