A US flag was burned in a fire set by protesters at the base of a recently removed Elk statue in Portland, Oregon, in the early hours of July 16.

The iconic statue was removed earlier this month after it was damaged by a fire lit during demonstrations in the city. A fire has since regularly been set at the same site. A 12-year-old boy was arrested after one fire incident, KPTV said.

Local news reports said protesters were attempting to establish an “autonomous zone” in the park around the former statue’s site, calling it the Chinook Land Autonomous Territory, or CLAT.

Justin Yau, who recorded this footage for his Portland Independent Documentarians Twitter page, said it showed “scenes from the second night of the Chinook Land Autonomous Territory.” Fires, he said, were “set at the base of the Elk fountain statue located on Chapman Square.”

Portland Police said that by around 5 am on July 16, Chapman Square Park and Lownsdale Square Park had been cleared. Both remained closed, they said. Credit: Justin Yau via Storyful
