California resident Hannah Chung captured video of the moment her neighbors sang “Happy Birthday” as a surprise to her quarantined fiance on his 30th birthday in a Los Angeles apartment complex on March 23.

According to Chung, she and her fiance, Jason Shields, have been together for five years. Shields proposed to her in December 2019 and the couple had plans to get married this month but had to put their wedding plans on hold due to the spread of COVID-19.

After the disappointment of having to cancel their wedding, Chung decided to surprise her fiance for his upcoming birthday as a way to lift both their spirits while also practicing social distancing guidelines.

Since the couple could not leave their home, Chung decided to take out her craft box and write 76 invitations for each of the units in her Downtown Los Angeles building.

She dropped off the invitations at each door and asked for her neighbors to sing to Shields from their windows at a designated time. She also asked people to have a drink in hand for a toast.

The next day the pair made their way to the roof of their apartment complex for a toast. Once they walked past the hallway of their building, Chung noticed her neighbors opening their windows. Chung asked her fiance to open the window as well, and before long everyone started to sing for him.

Chung said her gesture caught Shields by surprise and he was “touched by all the support.” Credit: Hannah Chung via Storyful
