Phase three interim results show that a vaccine developed by Oxford University may be up to 90-percent effective at preventing COVID-19, the university said on November 23.

The vaccine was developed in partnership with AstraZeneca, with over 24,000 volunteers from the UK, Brazil and South Africa. “Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90-percent effective and if [a specific] dosing regimen is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply,” said Professor Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group.

In the two different tested dose regimens, vaccine efficacy was 90 percent in one, and 62 percent in the other. “These preliminary data indicate that the vaccine is 70.4-percent effective, with tests on two different dose regimens showing that the vaccine was 90-percent effective if administered at a half dose and then at a full dose, or 62-percent effective if administered in two full doses,” said the university in a press release.

Though the vaccine may be less effective than others, it can be stored at fridge temperature, making it easier to distribute.
