Humpback Whale Feasts on Fish Off Long Island

A humpback whale delighted onlookers by lunge feeding close to the shore at Water Mill in Southhampton, New York, on Saturday, August 31.

Joanna Steidle said she captured this footage on Saturday morning of the whale “captivating surfers and lunge feeing on [a] massive school of menhaden bait fish just 20 yards from the shore.”

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, humpback whales spend most of their time during warmer months feeding and building up fat stores for winter. The whales use several techniques to help herd, corral, and disorient prey. Once the prey is corralled, they are pushed toward the surface and engulfed as the whale lunges upward.
