STORY: Iran's Revolutionary Guards seized a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.

Video obtained by Reuters showed a helicopter hovering over the vessel, which Iran said was linked with Israel.

It comes days after Tehran said it could close the crucial shipping route and warned it would retaliate for a suspected Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate in Damascus.

The video claiming to show the seizure included a figure abseiling from a helicopter onto the ship.

The vessel's operator confirmed Iran had seized the ship.

It said it was working "with the relevant authorities" for its safe return and the wellbeing of its 25 crew members.

The incident comes amid rising regional tensions since the start of Israel's campaign in Gaza in October.

Here's Israel's military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.

"Iran will bear the consequences for choosing to escalate the situation any further. Israel is on high alert. We have increased our readiness to protect Israel from further Iranian aggression. We are also prepared to respond."

Israel or its ally the United States are repeatedly clashing with Iranian-aligned groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Friday he expected Iran to attack Israel "sooner, rather than later" and warned Tehran not to do so.
