After his death was announced, tributes were paid to the Duke of Edinburgh across the world of sports. Prince Philip was a supporter and participant in a variety of sports. His Royal Highness represented Great Britain in both polo and carriage driving. The Duke played competitive polo for several decades, winning some of the equestrian sport’s most prestigious awards. Prince Philip was President of the Football Association from 1955 to 1977 And was with the Queen at Wembley when England won the World Cup in 1966. He took up carriage driving in the late 1960s and only retired from competitions at the age of 86. However, the Duke continued being involved in the sport until his death. Prince Philip also loved cricket, and was a former president of the Marylebone Cricket Club. One of his last public engagements was to open a new stand at Lord's cricket ground in 2017.
