STORY: UEFA will refund Liverpool fans who went to last year's Champions League final in Paris.

Europe's soccer governing body made the announcement Tuesday (March 7).

It comes after an independent report blamed UEFA for chaotic scenes outside the stadium.

The final between Liverpool and Real Madrid last May was delayed by 36 minutes.

That as thousands of Liverpool supporters could not get into the Stade de France for the match.

French police were filmed using tear gas on fans, including women and children.

UEFA at first said the English club's fans were responsible for the chaos.

But the governing body later apologised after the independent review.

UEFA said Tuesday it would refund fans who bought tickets and were most affected.

The body said refunds would be available to all those with tickets for gates A, B, C, X, Y and Z.

Liverpool fans had 19,618 tickets allocated for the final.

Two leading Liverpool fan groups welcomed the announcement, though they argued it did not excuse UEFA's actions.

They called on the organization to follow all of the recommendations made by the independent inquiry.

Tickets for the final cost up to about $733.
