Widespread rain placed many parts of New South Wales on flood alert on October 6, as Sydney experienced its wettest year since records began, according to local news reports.

A total of 2,199.8 millimetres (86.6 inches) of rain had been recorded in the year to 1.10 pm on Thursday, ABC reported. Sydney’s previous rainfall record was set in 1950, when 2,194.0 mm (86.3 inches) was dumped over the city.

Multiple weather warnings were in place across the state on Thursday, with flooding expected in much of western and central New South Wales, including the communities of Forbes, Warren, Dubbo, Nyngan and Bathurst.
