Volcanic activity continued at Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano on Saturday, May 27, as the Mexican government warned residents to stay away from the area.

According to the Washington-based Volcanic Ash Advisory Center on Saturday, “explosive” activity including ash plumes as high as 20,000 ft (6100 m) continued at the site.

Approximately 25 million people who live within a 60 mile (97 km) radius of the peak were urged not to approach the volcano as a yellow, phase-three warning remains in place for the eruption.

Footage posted by Mexico’s National Coordination of Civil Protection shows ash and smoke rising into the sky on Friday.

On Thursday, the country’s National Defense Guard said it was standing by to issue emergency alerts. Credit: CNPC via Storyful
