Demonstrations gripped Paris after the French government narrowly survived a vote of no confidence on Monday, March 20, sparked by last week’s decision to push through contentious pension reforms without a parliamentary vote.

Footage by Nicolas Mercier shows fires burning on trash-strewn streets in central Paris. Firefighters can be seen attending to some of the fires.

Citing police, Le Monde reported at least 171 people were arrested on Monday and early Tuesday.
