Lava flows from Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano that threatened to reach a highway came to a halt overnight into Thursday, December 8, as the supply from an erupting fissure was cut off, according to officials.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the lava flow stalled before reaching Saddle Road, a major route in the area that’s also known as the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

Hawaii resident John Kapono Carter said his captured this footage on Thursday showing the lava flow slowing down “about 1.8 miles from Saddle Road.”

On Friday morning, the USGS said activity at the last erupting fissure – “fissure 3” – was significantly reduced, and said “Saddle Road not threatened by lava.” Credit: John Kapono Carter via Storyful
