Rivers of lava oozed down streets in La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, on September 20, after a volcano erupted on the island the day before.

The eruption at the Cumbre Vieja volcano was reported around 3:30 pm local time on Sunday and sent smoke and lava spewing out of several fissures. Multiple government agencies responded, including the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan), the local council, civil protection units, firefighters, and police.

Between 5,000 and 10,000 people were expected to be evacuated from areas near the volcano, police said.

Video released by Gran Canaria Firefighters on Monday shows a blob of lava creeping down a street and a building burning.
