A Hasidic Jewish man was attacked and robbed by four people on Tuesday, September 17, as seen in this CCTV footage, shared by a local Jewish community group early on Wednesday, September 18.

The 24-year-old victim’s phone was also stolen in the attack. PIX11 reported the incident was not being investigated as a hate crime, but Jewish community groups called for stronger action on what they describe as a rise in attacks on Orthodox Jews in recent months.

“We urge the Brooklyn District Attorney to announce and implement stepped up prosecutions of those who commit bigoted-driven attacks against Orthodox Jews,” said the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council in an August 31 statement, which it reshared following the latest attack. “The number and type of attacks are getting worse by the week.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), in a report released early in 2019, said physical attacks on Jewish people in 2018 had risen 105% compared with 2017. In 2018, 11 Jewish worshipers were killed in an attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, the deadliest attack on Jews in the history of the US, according to the ADL.
