Syria Civil Defence volunteers retrieved a colleague’s body from under debris after his home collapsed during earthquakes on February 6.

Footage posted to the group’s Twitter page shows volunteers digging out their colleague, identified as Mahmoud Sharif, from the rubble. “Few days ago he was one of the rescuers providing help. Now he is a victim,” read a caption accompanying the video.

Syrian health authorities said at least 1,262 were dead in the wake of the earthquake. However, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) gave a higher figure, saying 1,435 people had died in areas controlled by the Syrian government and a further 1,700 in rebel-held areas.

Anadolu Agency, a state-run news agency in Turkey, reported that over 9,000 people were killed and more than 52,000 others injured across the country. Credit: Syria Civil Defence via Storyful
