Harriet Tubman's history starts with proof of birth in Maryland

Born into slavery in Dorchester County on Maryland's Eastern Shore, people from all over are reflecting on Harriet Tubman's remarkable story. March marks the 200th anniversary of Tubman's birth, and Thursday is Harriet Tubman Day in Maryland. While there are many myths about Tubman, a documented midwife payment proves she was real. Tubman was named Araminta Ross at birth. There was no evidence of her entrance into the world in her enslaver's Bible, no mention of her birth in his letters and there was no birth certificate.
