STORY: The 'killer whale' became beached in Cadzand in Zeeland province, Netherlands, local wildlife organisation SOSDolfijn said. According to SOSDolfijn, the orca was initially freed after emergency workers from the Netherlands' sea rescue service pushed her back to deeper waters. But when the animal became beached a second time later that day, teams were unable to save her.

The University of Utrecht said on its website that the orca had arrived at its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine on Sunday morning (October 16) for researchers to investigate the cause of the beaching. Quoting a faculty researcher, the university said experts would examine the orca's heath condition, diet and origin as well as cause of death. According to the university the creature was 5.17 metres (17 feet) long and weighed two metric tonnes (4400 lbs).

Orca's, also known as 'killer whales', are the largest member of the dolphin family of marine mammals.
