Shanghai zoo animals cool off amid sweltering heatwave

STORY: Visitors to Shanghai Zoological Park sweltered under the searing heat as hamadryas baboons, macaws and Asian elephants were given access to pools, mist sprayers and baths to cool them down.

China is gearing up for a summer of extremes this year, from scorching heatwaves to prolonged downpours. Cities south of the Yangtze in particular have been hit by both intense heat and record-breaking precipitation.

More than 90 red alerts, the most severe in a three-rung warning system, were active across China as of 3:30 p.m. (0730 GMT). Most were in the Yangtze basin, which spans nearly 2,000 km (1,200 miles).
