U.S. defeats Iran to advance to knock outs at World Cup

STORY: From Qatar…

MAN CHEERING IN QATAR: "We won today, we won! U.S.A.! U.S.A! U.S.A."

To back home in the United States…

CROWD IN U.S. BAR: “U.S.A.! U.S.A!”

Fans celebrated as the U.S. team advanced to the knockout round of the 2022 World Cup, after a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Iran Tuesday.

Christian Pulisic’s 38th minute goal proved enough for the Americans to advance at the expense of their geopolitical rivals in an eagerly awaited rematch of their 1998 World Cup group stage meeting, which Iran had won 2-1.

Unfortunately for the U.S. Team, Pulisic – whose nickname is Captain America-- sustained an abdominal injury during the goal and did not play the 2nd half, in a major blow for the Americans' knockout stage hopes.

FAN IN L.A. BAR: “I liked our chances. I thought we were the better team. The injury to Pulisic dealt a blow to us, but we got the right guys on the bench…”

Knowing that only a win would keep them in the tournament, the U.S. team pressed with high intensity from the first whistle.

The U.S. will now face the Netherlands on Saturday for a place in the quarterfinals.
