West Point Time Capsule Opening Reveals Only Dirt

A panel of experts at the US Military Academy West Point was likely left disappointed on Monday, August 28, when a sealed box dating to 1828 was discovered to be empty.

Experts planned to reveal the contents of the nearly 200-year-old time capsule, recently found during renovations to a monument to Gen Andrzej Tadeusz Bonaventura Kosciuszko, a Polish military engineer better known as Thaddeus Kosciuszko, who served as an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

“This time capsule is truly a unique discovery, and we are excited to open it and see what the cadets left us nearly two centuries ago,” US Military Academy Superintendent Lt Gen Steve Gilland said earlier this month. “The capsule’s contents will certainly add to the West Point story and is another example of past generations of cadets gripping hands with present and future generations.”
