Crowds gathered at the prehistoric Stonehenge site early on the morning of December 22 to mark the winter solstice at sunrise.

Video by Twitter user Andrew Ziminski shows people clapping, cheering, and enjoying the sunrise at the Neolithic stone circle.

The Stonehenge Twitter account said that there were “unprecedented numbers of vehicles arriving” for this year’s event.

As explained by the account, the monument aligns to the sun’s position on both the winter and summer solstices, allowing the light to shine between the rocks on these two days, to mark the expansion and contraction of daylight hours. Credit: Andrew Ziminski via Storyful
