The village of Klyuchi in eastern Russia recorded the most ashfall in 60 years following the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano on April 11, with up to 8.5 centimeters (3.3 inches) recorded, according to Russian news outlets.

The Shiveluch volcano in Russia’s far eastern peninsula of Kamchatka sprayed ash up to 20 kilometres (12 miles) into the sky.

The ash cloud from the eruption spread 500 km northwest of the eruption site, local news reported.

Footage from Oleg Bondarenko, head of the Ust-Kamchatsky municipal district, shows the town of Klyuchi covered in ash.

Bondarenko said he was proposing that schools in Klyuchi and nearby Kozyrevsk shut down for 10 days, saying, “it will be impossible for children to go to school, and in general, the presence of children here, by and large, is in question.”

According to Bondarenko, clean water and personal protective equipment was being supplied to residents of Klyuchi and Kozyrevsk. Credit: Oleg Bondarenko via Storyful
