All Blacks buried head to toe in hot sand bath

The All Blacks swapped the gym for the beach on Thursday (September 26) as some of the World Cup squad enjoyed the benefits of a hot sand bath.

Captain Kieran Read was among the players who dressed in white robes and were buried from head to toe in hot volcanic sand at Beppu beach as they recovered from a few days of hard training session.

The traditional Japanese recovery technique dates back to 1260 and is a way to help the body relax and soothe the muscles.

Eleven members of the All Blacks squad took part in the session as the world champions took the opportunity to embrace a part of Japanese culture.

New Zealand are based in Beppu ahead of their next World Cup match against Canada in Oita on Wednesday (October 2).

Steve Hansen's team beat South Africa 23-13 in their opening Pool B match.
