STORY: A wind-driven wildfire in Arizona pushed locals to flee to safety on Wednesday many taking their horses with them.

Steven Rossi is from Coconino County:

“All this land is people who have horses and so I figured if I just went far enough ‘someone’s going to have to take us in’. It’s just horse people, you know?”

The blaze, dubbed the Tunnel Fire, swept northeast over largely unpopulated hills 14 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, burning an area larger than the size of Manhattan.

That's according to the Inciweb fire information system.

More than 2,000 locals were forced from their homes, and at least 25 structures were burned.

The region has experienced more than two decades of unrelenting drought.
