Baby Quokka Makes Debut at Adelaide Zoo

A baby quokka peeked out of its mother’s pouch to make its debut appearance at Adelaide Zoo in South Australia, the zoo announced on March 10.

The joey was born to five-year-old Yiray, whose previous joey didn’t survive, the zoo added.

“Quokka joeys live in their mother’s pouch for around five months before making their way out to explore the world,” the zoo said.

Though quokkas were once “abundant across Australia,” they are now vulnerable to extinction, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Credit: Adelaide Zoo via Storyful
