The first flight carrying British nationals evacuated from Afghanistan has arrived in the UK.  British troops are racing against the clock to get remaining UK nationals and local allies home following the Taliban’s capture of Kabul and the presidential palace on Sunday. Here’s the history behind how the Islamist group’s takeover of the country. After the 9/11 bombings in 2001, the US threatened invasion of Afghanistan if the Taliban-controlled Afghan government did not hand over Osama Bin Laden. The Taliban refused and the US invaded the country, backed by British forces with the first UK troops arriving in Afghanistan in November 2001. Most combat operations ended in 2003 but in 2006 with the war in Iraq occupying US attention, militant attacks began resurging.The 20-year war saw hundreds of UK personnel suffer life-changing injuries with more than 450 deaths recorded.   .
