STORY: Paris’ Louvre Museum is exhibiting

five of Ukraine’s rare Byzantine icons

that were secretly evacuated from

the country to protect them from war

Location: Paris

The icons on display are from a

group of 16 extremely fragile works

that were exfiltrated in May from Kyiv’s

Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum

(Oleksandr Tkachenko, Ukrainian Minister of Culture)

"I think it's very, very symbolic because it can allow us to keep attention of what Russian barbarians are doing against Ukrainian culture. They have stolen our artefacts, they have ruined our cultural heritage sites. And this shows the importance of how big and huge is Ukrainian cultural heritage, which is part of world heritage."

Ukraine’s Khanenko Museum is currently empty

as its collections have been hidden

since the start of Russia’s invasion

The exhibition at the Louvre will

run from June 14 to November 6
