More than one third of Ebola cases in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are children, with one in 10 involving a child under five, UN children’s agency UNICEF said on December 10.

UNICEF said they identified more than 400 children who have been orphaned or left unaccompanied because of the virus.

More than 440 cases of Ebola have been confirmed in eastern DRC, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said, with 260 of them resulting in death.

In this footage, Marie-Pierre Poirier, UNICEF’s regional director for West and Central Africa, says that fatality rates for children are much higher than for adults. She says that UNICEF is putting in place medical and psychological supports for those who are affected by the virus. Credit: UNICEF via Storyful
