OpenAI, Jony Ive look to make 'iPhone of AI' - FT

STORY: OpenAI has caught the world's attention with ChatGPT.

Now it wants to build what's being called the 'iPhone of artificial intelligence'.

That's according a report in Britain's Financial Times Thursday (September 28).

The U.S. firm is reported to be in advanced talks with former Apple designer Jony Ive and Softbank Chief Executive Masayoshi Son over the idea.

The FT said OpenAI boss Sam Altman had reached out to Ive's company LoveFrom to develop the ChatGPT creator's first consumer device.

Discussions were said to be 'serious' but no deal had been agreed on.

The report added it could be months before a venture is formally announced.

It further said Altman, Ive and Son had discussed creating a company that would draw on talent and technology from their three groups.

SoftBank declined to comment on the FT report.

OpenAI did not immediately respond, while Ive and LoveFrom couldn't be reached for comment.

Tech website The Information first reported this week that Ive and Altman had discussed building a new AI hardware device.

Ive was a close creative collaborator with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

He spent more than two decades at the tech giant and led the design of the iPhone.
