The Russian Ministry of Defense announced the return of the troops from Kazakhstan, with the first airplane arriving at the Ivanovo-Severny Airport in Ivanovo, Russia, on January 13.

The Russian troops will leave Kazakhstan by January 19, Russian Defense Minister, Sergey Shoygu, said in a statement quoted by TASS.

Russia and other members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization — a NATO-like alliance made up of post-Soviet countries — were asked by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to deploy a peacekeeping force in Kazakhstan after demonstrations broke out on January 2.
