Ukrainian refugees turn to Berlin food banks

STORY: A charity official in charge of food distribution at a Berlin church-turned-food bank said they were trying to find ways to cope with the demand.

“We are not a supermarket,” said Stefanie Gumz of charity “Laib und Seele,” or loaf and soul, adding “every week we can offer what we receive and that must be enough. We will distribute it the best way possible so that everyone will get something.”

Earlier this week, Germany called for a more even distribution of Ukrainian refugees in the European Union, after some 3.8 million people fled Russian President Vladimir Putin's war on their country and crossed into the 27-nation bloc. Moscow calls its actions a "special military operation".

Since Russia invaded its neighbor on February 24, the fighting has displaced more than 10 million people and forced nearly 4 million to flee Ukraine. It is Europe's biggest refugee crisis since the end of World War Two, according to the U.N. refugee agency.
