STORY: The Women’s World Cup has made more than $570 million in revenue.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino made the announcement Friday (August 18).

The money made has helped soccer's global governing body to break even.

Despite raising the prize purse for the tournament tenfold compared to the 2015 competition.

Infantino called the event the "best" and "greatest" and "biggest" Women's World Cup.

"Some voices were raised, “Well, it costs too much. We don’t make enough revenues. We’ll have to subsidize.” And our opinion was, “Well, if we have to subsidize, we’ll subsidize, because we have to do that.” But, actually, this World Cup generated over 570 million U.S. dollars. In revenues. And so, we broke even."

In a typically combative speech, he further said the tournament's success had backed up FIFA's decision to raise the prize money, and to host it in Australia and New Zealand.

Infantino also said it justified the decision to expand the competition to 32 teams from a previous total of 24.

"We didn’t lose any money, and we generated the second-highest income of any sport, of course, besides the Men’s World Cup at global stage. More than half a billion. There are not many competitions, even in men’s football, that generate more than half a billion."

The $152 million prize purse being shared by the women at the event is still far short of the $440 million for the men's World Cup last year.

England play Spain in the final in Sydney on Sunday to close the tournament.
