STORY: These artists are busy crafting wax statues

for a new heritage museum in Iraq

Location: Basra, Iraq

Visitors will get a glimpse into

Basra’s older customs and traditions

through scenes placing

wax figures in different environments

(Mustafa Al-Hussiny, Basra’s State Board of Antiquities and Heritage)

"These scenes depict social life in old Basra to the coming generations. Old Basra in the centre of town, and some of the surrounding areas like Abu Al-Khaseeb, in the north of Basra, in Zubair - each district used to have its own unique traditions in terms of daily life and the use of tools. We tried to create 22 scenes and these scenes include 54 statues. These statues are made out of wax."

A team of Iranian artists did most of the work in Iran

and then transported the figures for final assembly

The museum is expected to open in the coming months
