Colorful boats fill Venice canals for rowing regatta

Usually there would be rowers from every corner of the world but of course the pandemic means this year it was mostly made up of Italians instead.

Last year's regatta was cancelled due to the pandemic, and the return this year is extra special for the city as it is celebrating its 1,600th anniversary.

As part of anniversary celebrations, this year's Vogalonga was made up only of rowers using the 'voga alla veneta' - a Venetian rowing technique on gondolas and other typical Venetian rowing boats.

The 30-km non-competitive rowing marathon was created in 1974 to raise awareness on the problem of waves afflicting the lagoon city.

However, due to coronavirus, it was cut short to 20-km long.
