Italians shrug as Domino's closes stores

STORY: [Journalist] "Domino's closed stores in Italy..."

[Jessica Zappone, Rome resident] "Yeah... What is it?"

American pizza chain Domino's is closing its Italian outlets

Location: Rome, Italy

[Journalist] "Domino's is an American chain of pizza restaurants and they wanted to take the American model of pizza here in Rome."

[Franco Gherardi, Rome resident] "Here? In Rome? So they wanted to take the pizza to the place where it was invented!? Americans understand nothing."

The fast food giant landed in Italy in 2015

with an agreement with national franchise company ePizza

But local restaurants operated a slicker delivery system and Domino's lost out

[Samuele Lacucci, Bologna resident] "There was no point in opening it...we were talking about it just this morning. It didn't make sense. Maybe an American pizza chain would have made sense for tourists, but for an Italian, it doesn't make sense. It's like me going to England and making fish and chips, it doesn't make sense. It's as if I went to China and open a Chinese restaurant, it doesn't make sense."
