'We lost everything' - Brazilian flood victims

STORY: "We even lost our house, we lost everything, everything," pregnant flood victim Keila da Silva told Reuters at a shelter. "What we have is what they gave us here."

The Civilian Protection team declared a state of emergency and the local government set up a crisis committee to manage the situation.

"There are people who had it worse, we didn't go through anything, there are people who had it worse, on the other street there were many elderly people who were under water, they couldn't get out of the place," flood victim Edicleia de Lara said through tears.

Flooding at this time of the year around Brazil is common and has caused devastation for decades.

In February, 94 people died in mudslides after heavy rains in the historic Brazilian mountain town of Petropolis, near Rio de Janeiro.
