Pilgrims ascend Mecca's al-Noor mountain ahead of Haj

STORY: Despite the long walk up narrow steps, pilgrims young and old make the journey to the cave to follow in prophet Mohammed's footsteps.

"We came here to see the place from which light and mercy to all people emerged,” said Egyptian pilgrim, Mohammed al-Shafiee.

Prophet Mohammed's revelation is believed to have happened during the holy month of Ramadan, on a night known in the Koran as the Night of Power.

The hike takes an average of forty minutes to complete, but could take longer due to the rough terrain and very high temperatures.

Around a million pilgrims are expected to converge onto Mecca this year to perform the annual Haj pilgrimage.
