STORY: People wearing Arema FC jerseys, including the club's manager and head coach, scattered flowers and cried at the tribute outside Kanjuruhan stadium, while others prayed quietly. Arema FC lost 3-2 to Persebaya Surabaya in the domestic BRI Liga 1 match on Saturday (October 1).

"We just hope that this incident will become a starting point for a new era of Indonesian and global football. Stop all of this. The result of a match is not worth paying for with people's lives, especially more than a hundred of them," the club's head coach Javier Roca said.

Panic-stricken spectators tried to escape the overpacked Kanjuruhan stadium in East Java province after police fired tear gas to disperse fans from the losing home side who ran onto the pitch at the end of the match. At least 125 people, including 32 children, were killed in the melee, authorities said.

Police and sport officials have been sent to Malang to investigate what is one of the world's deadliest stadium disasters. President Joko Widodo ordered the football association to suspend all Liga 1 matches until the investigation is completed.
