Truss appeals for party to support economic plan

STORY: ''I have three priorities for our economy. Growth, growth and growth.''

Liz Truss tried to rally the Conservative party Wednesday (October 5) at its annual conference.

It comes after a chaotic first month in office for the British prime minister.

The yearly meeting of Conservative lawmakers and members was overshadowed by arguments and policy confusion.

But Truss tried to reassure investors her plan would reignite growth and unite a divided country.

''That's why I'm determined to take a new approach and break us out of this high tax, low growth cycle. And that's what our plan is about. It's about getting the economy growing and rebuilding Britain through reform. The scale of this challenge is immense."

Truss recently announced a new economic policy that sparked a crisis of confidence among investors.

Her attempt to cut some $51 billion of taxes and hike government borrowing sent markets tumbling.

It also left her party facing potential electoral collapse, with the rival Labour party well ahead in public polling.

Truss was this week forced to reverse her plan to get rid of the top rate of tax.

The Prime Minister was also openly challenged by lawmakers and ministers over other policy areas.

Wednesday's speech did not initially seem to reassure markets, with sterling down around 1.5% versus the dollar in the hours following.
