Dozens of women participated in a walking marathon along the coastline of the Gaza Strip on Saturday 22 January. In doing so they defied the more conservative elements of Gazan society, who might oppose women participating in such an event. The annual walk was also being held to oppose violence against women in the territory. The women appeared to enjoy the marathon and each other's company as they walked.
