Many of those fleeing were seen with their belongings strapped on donkey carts, bicycles or were being carried by them as they walked. Residents said Israeli forces have not stopped pounding Jabalia, which is in the north of the enclave and is the largest of its eight historic refugee camps, from the air and ground.

There has been no fresh Israeli comment but the military said in past days that forces operating in Jabalia and nearby areas killed dozens of militants, located weapons and dismantled military infrastructure, though it remains unclear how many of the dead were civilians rather than fighters.

At least 20 Palestinians were killed and dozens more were wounded late on Friday by Israeli strikes in Jabalia, which also damaged four nearby homes, medics told Reuters, adding that the death toll is likely to rise.

At least 42,175 Palestinians have been killed and 98,336 others injured in Israel's military offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, Gaza's health ministry said on Saturday.
