Fights erupted between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups outside a synagogue in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 23, with several individuals seen deploying pepper spray.

Footage of the scene, captured by Sean Beckner-Carmitchel, shows rival protesters chanting and holding signs in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood of LA. The sound of canisters being sprayed can also be heard, with several people seen coughing and holding their faces.

In a press release, the Los Angeles Police Department said several physical altercations occurred, and confirmed one person was arrested for having a “spiked post” at the protest. The individual was cited and released, according to the LAPD.

The clashes also resulted in two reports of battery, the LAPD said.

In a statement to X, President Joe Biden said he was "appalled by the scenes outside of Adas Torah synagogue in Los Angeles. Intimidating Jewish congregants is dangerous, unconscionable, antisemitic, and un-American.

“Americans have a right to peaceful protest. But blocking access to a house of worship – and engaging in violence – is never acceptable,” Biden’s post continued. Credit: Sean Beckner-Carmitchel via Storyful
