STORY: The video showed the five women walking down the main Istiklal Avenue in the Taksim district of the city, chanting and holding up signs that say "Organise your anger" and making references to last month's deadly earthquake.

At least a dozen police officers are then seen surrounding the women.

The women detained were part of a group called Socialist Women's Movement, a representative of the group told Reuters.

Reuters could not immediately verify the details with local police.

International Women's Day was marked by rallies around the world.

In Turkey, it was being staged a little over two months before elections which are expected to represent President Tayyip Erdogan's biggest ever electoral challenge and just over a month after earthquakes that killed more than 52,000 people, angering many over what they say was a slow governmental response.
