He landed at Jakarta's Soekarno–Hatta airport on a chartered ITA Airways flight which also carried his entourage and accompanying reporters.

Sitting in a wheelchair, the pope disembarked from the plane via a lift and was handed a bouquet of local produce by two children dressed in traditional Indonesian attire.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, has about 280 million inhabitants, of which only about 3% are Catholic.

The pontiff is set to travel nearly 33,000 km (21,000 miles)on the 12 days of the Asia-Pacific tour, before he arrives back in Rome late in the evening of September 13.
