Pope meets nun who was kidnapped in Mali

The Vatican said in a statement that Francis spoke to Sister Gloria Cecilia Narvaez just before he said Mass in St. Peter's Basilica to open a two-year world-wide consultation on the Catholic Church's future.

Her release was announced by the presidency in Mali on Saturday (October 9) but the timing and other details were not clear.

Kidnapping has been a lucrative source of cash for Islamist groups in West Africa's Sahel region, where they are waging an expanding insurgency against national armies, French forces and U.N. peacekeepers.
