Rare Rothschild's giraffe born in Belgian zoo

STORY: In a video released by the park, the 12-year-old mother, called Juul, was seen giving birth in her enclosure.

The 4.9 foot (1.5 meter) tall newborn was then seen standing for the first time, meeting his sister Zuri and feeding.

Juul gave birth while standing, as giraffes do, dropping her 70-kg calf into life from a height.

After a 15 month gestation period, the calf was born at 4h09 (0309 GMT) at Pairi Daiza zoo, 31 miles (50 kilometers) southwest of Brussels.

Caretakers, who have not yet named the calf, said its six-year-old father Olivier watched the delivery in another enclosure for security reasons.
