A rare Mexican wolf pup has been named Sierra after more than 10,000 votes were cast in a naming contest, Brookfield Zoo Chicago has announced.

The adorable two-month-old Sierra is one of a litter of nine born in April as part of the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program, a “multi-agency conservation effort to increase the wild population for this species in the southwest United States and Mexico,” the zoo said.

Of the nine, Sierra and her sister Molly have remained at the zoo. Their seven siblings – six males and one female – were placed into Mexican wolf dens in New Mexico, the zoo said.

Footage released by the zoo shows Sierra relaxing in her enclosure.

“Mexican wolves are the rarest wolf subspecies, and zoos serve a vital role in conserving the species,” the zoo added. Credit: Jim Schulz/Brookfield Zoo Chicago via Storyful
