Meta explores ban on political ads in Europe - FT

STORY: Meta could ban political advertising on its platforms in Europe.

That's according to a report by Britain's Financial Times on Thursday (March 30).

It said Meta was concerned Facebook and Instagram would not be able to comply with upcoming EU regulations targeting online campaigns.

European lawmakers agreed tougher rules on targeted political advertising in February.

The aim was to fight misinformation during elections.

And the proposed rules would require U.S. tech giants to provide more data on their targeted political ads.

Any breaches would lead to fines up to 4% of their global turnover.

The Financial Times said Meta executives believed the definition of political ads could be excessively broad.

As a result, they feel it might be easier to refuse all paid-for political campaigns on the company's sites.

Meta didn't immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
