STORY: The U.S. infant formula shortage looks set to drag on.

It sparked panic earlier in the year, with parents rushing to grab supplies as shelves emptied.

The problem was sparked after Abbot Laboratories, then the top U.S. maker, recalled dozens of products.

That followed complaints over bacterial infections.

The White House had to step in, flying in supplies to help alleviate shortages.

Now a key manufacturer says the problem isn’t over.

British firm Reckitt Benckiser makes the new top seller - Enfamil.

It says the formula shortage will persist until spring.

However, it reassured parents that the situation was improving, and there was enough to feed America’s babies.

Reckitt has seen its sales rocket since the Abbott recall.

It now has just over half the market, and the firm says there’s no sign of the newfound popularity waning.

The company says its factories are working 24/7 to meet demand.

It’s also benefited from government support to help states supply formula to low-income families.

Rival makers Perrigo and Danone offered no immediate comment on the outlook from Reckitt.
